Let’s delve into this entertaining and insightful saying from a Singaporean perspective.

What Does “學業進步 Don’t Retain Again” Mean?

“學業進步” (xué yè jìn bù) translates to “progress in studies,” a common wish for academic success. Now, add the Singaporean twist: “Don’t Retain Again.” This phrase humorously acknowledges the local education system’s intense pressure, where retention (failing a grade) is every student’s nightmare. So, “學業進步 Don’t Retain Again” becomes a light-hearted yet earnest wish for smooth academic progress and avoiding the dreaded fate of repeating a year.

Why Is “Don’t Retain Again” So Relatable?

How Can You Avoid Retention?

While the phrase is meant to be humorous, there are practical steps students can take to avoid retention and excel in their studies. Here are some fun, tongue-in-cheek tips:

  1. Stay Awake in Class: We know it’s tempting to doze off during that post-lunch Math class, but staying awake might just save you from a year of repeating equations.
  2. Make Friends with the Smart Kids: Form study groups with the academically inclined. Their enthusiasm might just rub off on you.
  3. Befriend the Teachers: No, not in a brown-nosing way. Building a good rapport with teachers can help you get the extra guidance you might need.
  4. Use Your Phone Wisely: Yes, TikTok is fun, but your phone can also be a great study tool. Download some educational apps and make revision a bit more interesting.
